Cap, Bucket or Beanie? Match Your Fall Hat to the Fabric You're Already Wearing

Reversible Faux Suede Bucket Hat With Dotted Side

The gist: pick the hat by what's on your shoulders, not by the date. A structured cap works with denim and sweatshirts, a faux suede or faux leather bucket hat sits well with corduroy and trench coats, and a fold-over knit beanie belongs with wool coats and chunky sweaters. That order also happens to follow the season, since most of the U.S. moves from light jackets in late September to real coats by November.

We pulled six hats from our own rail and grouped them that way. Here's the cheat sheet before the details.

Hat Surface Pairs with Best stretch of fall
Embroidered lettering cap Woven crown, faux suede bill Sweatshirts, denim jackets Late September
Herringbone knit cap Herringbone weave with dots Trench coats, cable knits Early to mid October
Reversible faux suede bucket Brushed suede / polka dots Tailored coats, corduroy October
Faux leather bucket Smooth faux leather, leopard lining Chunky knits, denim Mid October to November
Argyle fold-over beanie Brushed wool-blend knit Peacoats, puffers November
Fuzzy leopard beanie Brushed fuzzy yarn Neutral coats, big scarves November onward

Why does fabric matter more than the hat shape?

Because your eye reads texture before it reads shape. A glossy faux leather hat over a fleece hoodie looks like two outfits stacked. The same hat over a denim jacket looks planned. When the hat and the jacket share a surface quality, soft with soft or smooth with smooth, you can go much louder on print and color without the outfit falling apart.

It also saves money. You don't need one hat per outfit. You need one hat per jacket family.

Which cap still makes sense while it's warm out?

Late September is cap weather. You want shade and structure, not warmth. Our embroidered lettering cap with the faux suede bill has raised stitched words across a patterned woven crown, butterflies or garden florals depending on the colorway. It's six panels with a snap back, so it keeps its shape in a tote.

Put it with a plain gray sweatshirt and straight jeans. That's it. The cap is busy enough that anything else patterned starts a fight.

What bridges the gap when the trench comes out?

The herringbone cap with scattered dots is the one we'd hand someone who says caps look too sporty. Herringbone is a coat fabric. Putting it on a curved-brim cap makes the hat look like it came from the same closet as your trench, and the dots keep it from going full grandpa. Five shades, from dark grey to khaki, so you can match it to the coat instead of the other way round.

Try it with a cable knit and a trench on a drizzly October morning.

How do you wear a bucket hat without it looking like summer?

Swap the cotton for something with a nap or a sheen. The reversible faux suede bucket hat has a brushed solid side and a polka dot side, with stitched rows around the brim that help it hold a downturned line. We wear the suede side with a corduroy jacket on weekdays and flip to dots on Saturday. It comes in black, coffee and khaki, all easy against fall browns.

For something with more edge, the faux leather bucket hat with a leopard-lined brim is paneled and a little slouchy, and the print only shows when the brim tips up. It looks best with rough textures: a chunky sweater, a washed denim jacket. The contrast between smooth crown and nubby knit is the whole point.

When is it actually time for a beanie?

When your ears start to complain. For most of the country that's November, though northern cities get there sooner. Fold-over cuffs matter here, because the doubled rib sits right over the ears.

The argyle fold-over beanie is a brushed wool blend in seven colorways, including wine red and white. Argyle reads a bit preppy, which makes it a good partner for a peacoat. On a puffer it tones down the sporty look.

If you'd rather the hat be the joke in the outfit, the fuzzy leopard beanie has a soft halo from the brushed yarn and comes in grey, red and orange. Grey is quiet enough for a black coat. Orange is not quiet at all, and we like it that way.

How do these hats work across one closet?

  • Denim jacket or sweatshirt: embroidered lettering cap.
  • Trench or cable knit: herringbone cap.
  • Corduroy or a tailored coat: reversible faux suede bucket, solid side out.
  • Chunky sweater or washed denim: faux leather bucket.
  • Peacoat or puffer: argyle beanie.
  • Plain black or camel coat: fuzzy leopard beanie.

Two hats cover most of the season if you choose one smooth and one soft. The full lineup, including ear warmers for when it really turns, is in our hats collection, and there are matching fringe wraps in scarves.
