Buy the Bottom Half First: Six Fall Pieces That Decide the Outfit

High Waist Corduroy Wide Leg Trousers by Flolae

Short version: stop shopping for fall from the top down. Six bottoms cover September through November here, and each one is really a decision about hem width and shoe. Pick the hem first, and the sweater question answers itself.

Bottom Hem Shoe it wants Top that balances it
Corduroy wide leg Wide, floor-skimming Loafer or low boot Fitted knit, tucked
Pinstripe wide jean Wide, straight drop Pointed flat Cropped cardigan
Camo cargo jean Wide with volume Sneaker Plain tank, one layer
Split hem jean Opens over the instep Ankle boot Anything oversized
Faux leather wide Heavy, falls straight Heel or sharp boot Soft knit, no shine
Fringe midi skirt Moves on its own Western boot Close-fitting top

Which bottom earns its place first?

Corduroy, and it isn't close. The ribbed surface catches light the way a flat trouser never does, which means a plain sweater on top still looks considered. Our high waist corduroy wide leg trousers run in an apricot that sits somewhere between camel and rust — warmer than a neutral, calmer than a statement.

One fitting note: wide corduroy needs about a half inch of clearance off the floor in flats. Any longer and the wale frays at the back hem by November.

Can a pinstripe jean pass outside the office?

It can, because the stripe is doing the work a tailored trouser usually does without the stiffness. The pinstripe high waist wide leg jeans read as denim up close and as suiting from across a room. That gap is useful on days that start at a desk and end somewhere else.

Keep the top quiet. A stripe plus a pattern above the waist turns into visual noise fast.

Is camo a pattern or a personality?

Both, which is why we treat it as the outfit rather than a piece of one. The camouflage cargo pocket wide leg jeans carry green, olive and sand already, so everything above them should stay in one color. A black tank. A cream knit. Nothing else.

The cargo pockets sit on the thigh, not the hip, which keeps the widest point of the leg below where you actually are widest. That placement is the whole reason this shape works on more people than it has any right to.

What does a split hem actually solve?

Boot season. A closed wide hem bunches on top of an ankle boot and kills the leg line; a split lets the fabric fall on either side of the shaft. The snap detail wide leg split hem jeans add snaps up the outer seam, so you can open the split further on a boot day and close it flat for sneakers.

Two garments, one hanger. We are not above counting that as value.

When does faux leather stop reading as evening only?

When the waist is soft. A rigid leather trouser announces itself; a smocked waist lets the piece behave like a regular wide leg until you add a heel. The faux leather smocked high waist wide leg pants go to dinner with a heel and to a Saturday market with a chunky knit and flat boots, and the second version is the one we wear more.

Avoid shine on shine. If the pants have surface, the top should absorb light — wool, waffle, brushed cotton.

Does a skirt still count in October?

With tights and a boot, yes, and a skirt with fringe solves the problem most fall skirts have: they hang dead. The western fringe faux suede midi skirt moves when you do, which reads as intentional in a season of heavy, static fabrics.

Fringe wants a close top. Fringe plus an oversized sweater is a lot of fabric doing a lot of things at once.

How would we wear these through one week?

  • Monday: pinstripe wide jean, cropped cardigan, pointed flat.
  • Tuesday: corduroy trousers, fitted ribbed knit tucked at the front, loafer.
  • Wednesday: split hem jean, oversized pullover, ankle boot, snaps open.
  • Thursday: faux leather wide leg, brushed knit, flat boot.
  • Friday: camo cargo jean, black tank, sneaker, coat on top.
  • Saturday: fringe midi skirt, close-fitting top, tights once it drops below 55°F.

Six bottoms, no repeats that look like repeats. Start in Bottoms, or go straight to Jeans if the wide leg is the part you have been putting off.
